Top 5 free family days out in Lincoln

Top 5, Free family days out in Lincoln this summer

Lincoln is a city with a rich history and plenty of things to see and do for kids of all ages, and the best part is, many of the best activities are completely free!

So whether you’re looking for a day out in the city or some time in nature, here are my top 5 free kids activities the summer holidays:

1. Meet Lucy the Dragon at Lincoln Castle

Meet Lucy and Norman at Lincoln Castle. Back for the summer and beyond is Lucy the Dragon, and she’s brought her friend Norman along too.

Lincoln castle grounds are the perfect spot for a picnic after a morning exploring the historic Bailgate area of Lincoln, and now the kids can say hi to a real smoke breathing dragon too.

Cost – Free to enter the castle grounds and meet Lucy. Extra charges apply to walk the castle walls (well worth it I think), and enter the buildings. Entry fees apply on event days. Check the Lincoln castle website for more info.

2. Go on a heart trail

Fun for the whole family, and free to take part, this years heart trail by St Barnabas takes you all around the city’s historic streets (and further across the county if you want to find them all).

It runs until the 4th September, after which all sculptures will be at the Lincoln Museum (The Collection) from the 11th – 28th September 2023.

3. The Lincoln Museum & Usher Art Gallery

Both free to enter, and next door to one another, these are two places to definitely pop on your list.

The museum has lots to appeal to children of all ages with mosaic making, trails and games.

Also if you’re looking for for fun things to do with younger children, the Lincoln museum has a activity centre that encourages learning through play. Children can Dress up as a princess, a knight or even a dragon, design a Roman Shield or do some Coin rubbing.

Free to enter – donations welcome.

4. Lincolnshire Life Museum

The Lincolnshire life museum celebrates the counties’ rich and varied history and makes an excellent day out.

It’s a great place to learn about the history and culture of Lincolnshire. There are exhibits on everything from farming to fashion, and you can see an authentic World War One tank named “Daphne” too.

Free to enter – donations welcome.

5. Visit the park

There are so many lovely parks in and around Lincoln so visiting at least one really should be on your list this summer.

Many have play areas too, so take in the fresh air, explore together and let the kids run off some energy before heading home or to your holiday accommodation.

Here are a few of my favourites;

  • Lincoln Arboretum
  • Hartsholme Country Park
  • Boultham Park

These are just a few of the many free and fun activities that are available in Lincoln for kids of all ages. So what are you waiting for? Start planning your summer today!

Here are some additional tips for making the most of your free days out in Lincoln:

  • Pack a picnic lunch. This will save you money and give you a chance to enjoy the outdoors.
  • Visit the tourist information center in castle square. They can help you find free activities and events that are happening during your visit.
  • Check out the Lincoln City Council website. They have a list of free activities and events that are happening throughout the year.
  • Be flexible. Sometimes the best things to do are the ones that you least expect. So be open to exploring and trying new things.

I hope you have a fun and memorable summer in Lincoln!
